Our curriculum is organised in such a way that it provides pupils with the opportunities to experience success in their learning in line with our ethos, mission and aim: To Engage, Educate and Empower every young person that comes to our school.

Curriculum Overview

Our curriculum is designed to give our young people the opportunity to learn and make progress both academically and personally whilst maintaining their wellbeing. We believe it is important that our pupils follow a broad, balanced, and exciting curriculum and one that is relevant to their needs and abilities. The curriculum provided at The UET Compass  Belton Academy is part of a range of strategies that we use to help prepare pupils for developing independence and a life outside of school; Our approach is holistic and aims to look at the child’s academic, physical and personal needs and is clearly linked to our pupils becoming well informed and active citizens in a multi-cultural and diverse society.

Our pupils can struggle to access learning and we support them to overcome personal barriers by taking a therapeutic and nurturing approach, through good teaching, clear methods of working and a relevant curriculum. We value high quality teaching for all learners and actively monitor teaching and learning in the school.

Curriculum Intent

Across our Primary provision we offer a curriculum which reflects the ethos of our school and ensures progress in an interesting and engaging way. The curriculum has been further developed to suit the complex needs of our pupils and in lessons there is clear differentiation in place to support individuality and personalisation which incorporates the statutory National Curriculum.

Our curriculum recognises children’s prior learning experiences and is focused on filling gaps and improving outcomes for all our learners. We use our unique context to support learning and engagement across all Key Stages providing pupils with opportunities to develop their social skills, British Values, and SMSC understanding as well as core and creative subjects. A variety of offsite trips and experiences enhance engagement and personal development of pupils and support the opportunity for spiritual awareness.

Curriculum Impact

Our pupils are happy and enjoy coming to school. All pupils acquire the knowledge and cultural capital they need to succeed in life. They make progress, in that they know more, remember more and are able to do more. The holistic approach provided at The UET Compass Belton Academy, prepares pupils for their next stage of education at each stage of their learning. Curriculum impact is measured through the school’s rigorous assessment processes and is reviewed annually to ensure that it remains relevant and meets the needs of all pupils.

Reading Approaches

All pupils are assessed on their reading levels, spelling and comprehension on entry. The UET Compass Belton Academy uses the Read, Write, Inc. phonics programme to help develop reading including the Fresh Start programme used with KS3 students to check reading fluency and fill any gaps in understanding.  Re-assessment is completed regularly to track progress. Other assessments are completed throughout the academic year such as phonics screening checks and national curriculum assessments. Reading is promoted through teaching and pupils are given a range of opportunities to enjoy and experience reading.
