Families in hardship and needing wider support

In addition to the offer of FSM vouchers for eligible families, there is support available for families who are facing hardship and need support.

Anyone experiencing hardship may be able to receive support through the Norfolk Assistance Scheme (NAS), which may be able to provide support for food, fuel, clothes and other essential household items to families experiencing hardship. Wider support from a range of partners can then also be made available with NAS working alongside the Children’s Services Community and Partnerships service.

Families may get in touch with NAS via their dedicated website which includes an online application form, at Norfolk Assistance Scheme – Norfolk County Council or if they cannot access the internet, they can call 0344 800 8020.

Get early help

Early Help is about giving information, advice and guidance to families as soon as there is a worry in a child’s life.

This can be for children of any age up to 18 and also can help with the worries adults may have, such as finances and mental health, which may impact on the children.

If you have difficulties in your family, or if you are worried about your children, there are people who can support you.

If family life feels unsafe or difficult to cope with, or if you are worried about the safety or welfare of a child, follow this think to talk to somebody about it.

Who can help

Most of us get the best support from the people who care about us – our friends, families and the community we live in. This is our family network.

Find out more about family networking and how it can help on the Just One Norfolk website.

If you need more help than your family network can give, you can speak to people like your health visitor, child’s school or family doctor. You can also get help and support in these places:

We also provide information which supports the Local Offer, Care Act and Childcare Act.

Short Breaks

A new Short Breaks statement for 2022-23 has been published on the Norfolk SEND Local Offer web pages.

Short Breaks enable children and young people between the ages of five and 18 to become more independent and explore new opportunities by engaging in Short Breaks activities outside school hours during evenings, weekends, school holidays, and sometimes overnight.  They can be delivered in a range of different settings, such as in a family’s home, at a centre, or out and about in the community. They give parents and carers time to do the things they can’t do while looking after their child, including looking after themselves.  The new statement explains what short breaks are, what Norfolk County Council’s short breaks duty is, who is entitled to short breaks, how to apply and how the level of need for a child or young person is decided. It also explains individual budgets, and the different ways families can spend their direct payments.
